These are also called mini-split air conditioners. They are installed high up in an exterior wall, and generally are attached to a heat pump. This allows them to be used to both heat and cool your house. The heat pump works by using the theory that heat wants to find equilibrium. That means that heat wants to be with itself and it will work really hard so that the temperature stabilizes. So the heat pump will absorb the heat in your house and shunt it to the outside while making sure that your house stays cool. In the winter, the heat pump will do the same, but only in reverse in order to keep your house warm.  

Cooling Zones

One benefit to using ductless air conditioners is that you can set up cooling zones and not have to cool areas that aren't getting used, as well as setting the different units for different temperatures. For example, you may have three AC units set up in your house, one in your bedroom, one in your living area, and one in your kitchen. You may like to have the temperature really cold in your bedroom, so you can set that unit so it's on high, but you don't want your living area to be at the same temperature. You can also set the system so that it won't cool down areas that you aren't using while still keeping the area where you are nice and cool.

Cooling Schedules

Many of the units also have a scheduling setting. That means you can set each unit to turn on at a particular time as well as to a certain percentage, which means you can have it set to start cooling off your house a little while before you come home, so you are coming home to a comfortable house.
